Wright and Ellison

Part A

For this assignment, we’ll be discussing Richard Wright’s “Blueprint for Negro Writing” and Ralph Ellison’s
Invisible Man. As I mentioned in the Module 5 Lecture on the
Module 5 Required Readings page, these are the questions I encourage you to consider as you discuss these readings on the discussion board: What does Richard Wright advocate for when it comes to mid-twentieth century African American literature? How is literature related to cultural issues like segregation and economics? What does Ellison present as the experience of the Black man in the mid-twentieth century? How do the writings of Wright and Ellison represent a shift in format and content for African American literature?

Part B Textual Analysis

For this Textual Analysis, you can choose to discuss Nella Larsen’s

Passing

 Download Passing
, Richard Wright’s “Blueprint for Negro Writing,” or Ralph Ellison’s
Invisible Man.

First, you should select a brief section or passage from your chosen reading. Place that passage at the top of your response (or indicate where it is in the reading by stating the page numbers). Next, you should write 300 words (not counting the selected passage) in which you
analyze—not summarize—the significance of that selection. This means that instead of merely retelling the chosen work, this analysis will focus in on the effects or the meaning of the piece through analytical exploration. (
If you are unable to download it, no worry, just find a passage and write about Richard Wright’s Blueprint for Negro Writing or Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man. Find the story online).
