The respiratory system is one of the most essential systems in the human body, responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and our cells. It is composed of several components, including the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.

1. Introduction:
The respiratory system is involved in the process of respiration, which consists of two main functions – external respiration and internal respiration. External respiration refers to the exchange of gases between the atmosphere and blood, while internal respiration involves the exchange of gases between blood and body cells. This system ensures the supply of oxygen to the cells and the removal of carbon dioxide, enabling cellular metabolism and maintaining the body’s homeostasis.

2. Body:
The respiratory system is intimately related to achieving homeostasis in the human body. It works in coordination with other systems, particularly the circulatory system, to ensure the delivery of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide throughout the body. Oxygen is required by cells for energy production through the process of cellular respiration. When we inhale, air enters the respiratory system and travels through the different components, reaching the alveoli in the lungs. In the alveoli, oxygen diffuses into the bloodstream and binds to hemoglobin, which carries it to the body’s tissues. At the same time, carbon dioxide produced as a byproduct of cellular metabolism is carried by the blood back to the lungs. In the lungs, it is released into the alveoli and subsequently expelled during exhalation. This continuous process ensures the maintenance of appropriate oxygen levels and the elimination of carbon dioxide, contributing to the body’s overall homeostasis.

3. Conclusion:
One common respiratory disease prevalent in Saudi Arabia is asthma. Asthma is a chronic condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to recurrent episodes of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. It primarily affects the bronchial tubes, which are part of the respiratory system. During an asthma attack, the airways become swollen and narrow, making it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs. This obstruction compromises the normal functioning of the respiratory system, affecting the exchange of gases and potentially leading to respiratory distress.
