Hopefully, everyone’s doing well & feels like they’ve been learning lots this semester. Once again, most all students currently active & engaged with course work are positioned for success in this section of ENGL 2113. One of the important things to discuss about our final Romantic Period’s prose author, comes from what Frederick Douglass tell us about troubling gender differences within the system and he gives moment-by-moment realistic details about his mother, Aunt Hester, and other women’s constrained lives in this period. During Week Nine’s overview & lecture, I reminded everyone to keep track of how the author depicts & represents the treatment of female slaves & female characters in the narrative versus male slaves & male characters like Mr. Gore, Denby, Mr. Covey. Quite importantly, these characters have equivalents of the opposite sex in this narrative & how Douglass represents them is what your essay is going to focus on for this unit’s essay topic. Your focus will be over the primary text & literature and absolutely no secondary source is required or necessary for this short essay. Many other important female characters and stories about them appear as chapters progress and at very crucial moments. Focus on at least three female characters other than the author’s mother and aunt that occur in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in your proofread essay & submission.
Start soon for success! This two-page minimum essay length is manageable & the time being given more than enough for everyone to do well. Also, if necessary consider using a peer or friend to help proofread. At this point in the semester totally rushed typos & informal text-like language of some discussion posts should disappear from final submissions in a 2000-level course.

Your assignment for the Unit Two essay will be to review what you’ve learned about our final Romanticism Period author Frederick Douglass. Then write and submit a finished essay, 2 pages to 3 pages in length, min. & max., on the following topic: “The Treatment and Representation of Female Characters throughout Frederick Douglass’s 1845 Narrative.”
Submission Instructions: Write, proofread, and submit two to three pages, double spaced, using TN Roman or a standard 12-point font. Due date Saturday, March 13th @ 11:59PM
* Once again, choose & focus on at least three female characters other than the author’s mother and aunt that occur in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass in your proofread essay & submission for this Unit Two assignment.
*Use a standard 12 pt. font, parenthetical page citations, & double space.
*Please understand that lengths are determined by best teaching practices and standards, so do not submit until you’ve drafted a minimum of two pages & going longer onto page three is recommended since everyone’s writing about a prose work & the topic offered is quite manageable.
