Ethical dilemmas arise in many areas of healthcare and nursing practice, and technological developments have introduced new concerns. There are many different ways to approach ethical issues in our society, and theoretical frameworks help to provide guiding principles for decision-making. Theories provide the lens through which we might evaluate an ethical issue. McGonigle and Mastrian (2018) outline several different theoretical approaches to healthcare ethics (pp. 83-86). They include: 1. Principlism 2. Causist Approach 3. Virtue Ethics 4. Care Ethics, and 5. Consensus-based Approach For this paper, you will identify an ethical issue (real or potential) related to the use of informatics and analyze it using the ethical model for decision-making, provided in BOX 5-1 (pp. 89-91) of the McGonigle and Mastrian (2018) text. Address each of the following seven areas: • Examine the ethical dilemma (conflicting values exist). • Thoroughly comprehend the possible alternatives available. • Hypothesize ethical arguments, applying one of the five theoretical approaches outlined above. • Investigate, compare, and evaluate the arguments for each alternative. • Choose the alternative you would recommend. • Act on your chosen alternative. • Look at the ethical dilemma and examine the outcomes while reflecting on the ethical decision. Directions • Compose a four to six page paper (exclusive of the title page and reference page). • Address all elements as outlined above, using a Level 1 heading (APA, 2010, p. 62) for each bulleted area. • Support your content with at least two scholarly resources from the nursing or healthcare literature, in addition to the course textbooks. • Use APA format. • Follow all criteria of the Written Assignment Rubric.
