Concept mapping is brainstorming with a purpose. You start with an overarching concept that you break down into its smaller parts, using arrows and linking words to show how ideas are connected.

In this assignment you will create a concept map around a state corrections policy of your choice.

Steps To Complete

  1. Choose a state corrections policy for your concept map. Use this link to explore different state corrections policies:State Departments of Corrections Web-Based Policy and Procedure Manuals | National Institute of Corrections (nicic.gov)
  2. Do a quick brainstorm on the facts, ideas, concepts, data around the issue, etc. that come to mind. Keep your notes on this step as concise as possible.
  3. Do a drawing of the map or use sticky notes/scrap paper. You might start from the top and develop concepts downward or put your individual at the center and expand concepts outwards. Either way make sure that the central topic stands out from the rest (use a bigger node, a different color etc.).
  4. Identify the connections between different concepts related to your state corrections policy. Put down the linking words or phrases to indicate the relationship between the two concepts you are linking. Enclose key words in shapes such as circles, boxes, triangles, etc. to represent different categories.
  5. Connect concepts from different areas or domains. Draw arrows between related ideas. Arrows can vary to represent different connections (e.g. dots for weak connection or solid line for strong connection).
  6. Create the final map in a format/program of your choice as long as it is legible and can be uploaded to an iCollege assignment folder. No links, screen shots or hand drawings please. Acceptable formats include, but not limited to pdf. or word.doc.
  7. Please add full APA references as a separate page or within the comment box prior to submitting. Make sure you are mostly using empirical research.
  8. Remember to give your concept map a unique title and add description of what you are presenting.
  9. Upload your concept map.
